Hi
Just want to say a big thank you for calling into the Mina
port in Lebanon. It was something of great and joy and
interest for the local people to see this ship especially
for the school children and I want to thank Nicolas
especially for answering questions and talking to us for a
while. Congratulations on your voyage and achievements and
I really hope you enjoyed your time in Lebanon.
Best Wishes

Heartiest congratulations
Phillip!
An achievement for the history books and a two-plus year
adventure that has kept people worldwide enthralled.
We now have a clearer idea of what people in that era were
capable of with seafaring and exploration.
Best wishes to the core crew also!
I only wish I'd experienced the original 600BC toilet
before it was washed away by a big wave and Dirman had to
build a new one.

Hi Phillip & Crew
I just want to congratulate you and the whole crew on your
amazing accomplishment. It really feels good to know that
you succeeded and proved the ever present critics wrong –
I can like it!!!
Please convey my message to the whole crew and tell them
they had a extremely good inspirational influence on the
club as a whole. They might not know it, but the Phoenicia
left a legacy behind that people cherish and can relate
to.
It is good to know that we were a part of this adventure
albeit in a small way and we are proud to be associated
with the Phoenicia and everything she stands for.
Once more, congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hope we meet
again.
Cheers

Heartiest congratulations on the successful completion of
a remarkable venture. It has been an adventure in itself
following the progress of the expedition.

To the captain and crew: what
a phenomenal voyage you have completed. Congratulations,
and enjoy the well deserved celebrations. We are sure you
will all miss your home on the sea, the Phoenicia. We will
so miss our "Phoenicia -Spotting".....you have kept us
interested, entertained, and at times, ( we have to admit
), somewhat daunted, especially as you sailed the
Atlantic! However even though you will not be out there
on the oceans, we are sure that we will be returning to
the website to read it all over again.
With our regards,

The Phoenician Ship in Malta was quite
memorable. It is the first time a replica ship of the
Phoenicians entered Malta. AS I am coming from direct
descent from the Phoenicians, seeing one of our ancestors
vessel is quite emotional. A Maritme Historian friend of
mine was also excited to see the vessel as well. I was
much honoured by Philip’s Beale and Yuri Sanada’s presence
and was able to show them the best sights in Malta. I have
taken some photos of their stay here too. I have also
filmed the vessel’s stay and departure and can see a short
7 minute I have edited video plus photos at the following

Wow! I came along to see your
vessel the day following your arrival in Gibraltar... and
was stunned to see it. I think I was expecting something
larger and was in awe of the journey you (and your
historic predecessors) undertook in a ship that must feel
dwarfed by the oceans through which you have sailed.
I don't have 'sea-legs' at all and I have to admire your
skills (and those of the ship-builders who built her) in
navigating the various seas and oceans that you have
covered.
May you all have fair winds to enable a safe arrival at
your destination!

Dear Sirs,
I have just seen your course
plotted on the map and am astonished to see how far west
into the Atlantic you steered; I thought the Phoenicians
hugged the coast of Africa throughout the whole of their
voyage.
Was this not incredibly
dangerous? Were you lucky or is your vessel easily
capable of dealing with the Atlantic at these latitudes?
Would then the original
Phoenicians have had to steer out into the Atlantic?
Well done - you are doing a
marvellous job - I will have to buy the DVD and book
when they come out.
Very best wishes,

Danielle,
We are keeping track of your voyage once again.....already
had a boy in class ask if you were sailing for North
Africa, that's where his father was born. We will have so
many new questions about the Med Sea. Ask the crew about
the change in color of the sea from the ocean for
me....I'm voting for tints and shades of cerulean! In 2
weeks I will get to tell the Phoenicia story and our
school's artist-in- virtual-residence project at the
National Maritime Heritage Educator's Conference in
Baltimore, MD.....fair thee well~ capt suz, coastal NC

Hi Crew.
congratulations! your voyage is very interesting.
it will be very interesting to see your ship in one of the
most important phoenician's colony (island of Mothia near
Marsala, Sicily, Italy)
I am an italian's reenactor (roman's soldier) of Milan
(Italy) and I have visited Mothia (founded circa 600 BC)
just this summer.
Good Luck.
Luigi
PS I am wondering to build also a roman's ship. Could you
tell me the cost of the materials necessary to build the
ship (workers excluded)? Thanx |

Hi Phillip and Crew
Great to read about the fantastic progress and pleased the
stocks of fresh veggies are still holding out. I always
appreciated the kai (food) onboard, no matter who was
cooking - Yuri's fresh bread a particularly memorable
treat, up there next to seared tuna. In fact I think I had
second helpings pretty much every meal!!
I was wondering if anyone had considered sprouting beans?
I've been experimenting with them in readiness for a big
offshore sail and even I can grow them!
These little babies are SO easy to sprout in an old jar,
take up no room at all as seeds when they're stowed away
and they are good to eat in as little as two or three
days. Very cheap and highly nutritious! Thoroughly
recommended. Best of all, lentils, Mung beans, Maple,
Alfalfa.
Just a thought for next time you re-provision.
As always, I wish you fair winds and look forward to
keeping up to date with your progress.

I just found you through Rod
Meldrum. What a fantastic thing you are demonstrating. I
read an obscure news clip back in 1999 I believe, that
officials had found an unusual wooden vessel on bottom of
the St. Lawrence seaway, that was obstructing one of the
locks or something. At that time I did not realize what it
could mean. Now I believe it could relate to the theory of
pre-Christian Atlantic migrations as they said the wood
was extremely old and curios type.
At the time I was struck with the feeling that it might
relate to a Jaredite migration from western Spain. I am in
possession of an emailed document from a man who descends
from the Pyrenees Mountain people. He says that ancestral
verbal histories taught him where his people came from and
when ancestors sailed into the western sea, many stayed in
the mountains. If these wonderful people can be linked to
the Jaredites, by the same methodology used by Rod Meldrum,
another "Jaredite" expedition could be a feasible project.
Has anyone built a Jaredite "barge" yet?

Hey Pete,
Well done! Hang in there! In a while you'll be sailing
your own 'Phoenician Ship'! I wish I had the miles you now
have... To the rest of the crew, I missed you at the
Zululand Yacht Club. I was on a yacht called Alacrity when
you arrived at Richards Bay. The purple sails made me
remember my primary school history lessons about the
Phoenicians. The story is unfolding. Of particular
interest is the blog concerning possible Phoenician
presence in the Americas. There's also a story about a
chart of Antarctica originating in content from some time
BC.
Well done all!

Congratulations to you all on
completing the long voyage to Flores.!
I am immensely interested in your great recreation of
Pharaoh Necho's ship's voyage, having first been
introduced to Herodotus's account of it at the age of 11,
way back in 1950. Having retired from a career in
educational broadcasting in 1999, I have much enjoyed
publicising your expedition since you began building
Phoenicia in Arwad. As an (unpaid) lecturer aboard cruise
ships for the past decade I have been singing your praises
and drawing attention to the website whenever possible and
shall continue to do so while my marbles are spared.
Very best wishes to you all and for your terrific project.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! I'm sending an African proverb: "Smooth
Seas make not Skilled Sailors"~
Watch your legs now sailors, land will feel like a
stranger to your footing (don't close your eyes in the
shower, you may find your balance drifting). So glad you
have finally arrived, all hands fine!!

Howdy Clinton,
Well what a build-up to THE GAME which you will most
likely know by now, that England lost to Germany
4-1. Very disappointing for England, but now we can
give all our attention to Wimbledon! I read Abi's
message, no doubt football fever will continue in
SA. They are enjoying it immensely it seems.
Regards to all the crew,

Hi Pete
Still following the blogs every day. Loving the
profiles on crew members, they obviously know you
very well.
Hope the last 1000 miles to Azores passes quickly
and that you get better winds (in the right
direction).
We are watching loads of soccer and tennis at the
moment. The soccer world cup has really grabbed
everyone here – the spirit in Cape Town is amazing.
Keep strong
Lots of love

Hello Phoenicia and Crew,
Saw the posting about Phoenicians in America. I have
been chasing diffusionist stories for about twenty
years. There is a wide variety of physical evidence
for Phoenician and Carthaginian visits to the
Americas. There are many inscriptions along the
major waterways, some which reach the Arkansas River
here in Colorado. In the southeastern corner of the
State are a series of calendar caves with depictions
of Anubis and Ba al. On a bluff nearby is a gallery
with text in Neo- Punic, Egyptian and Iberian Celtic
Ogam. There are also depictions of African animals
on the panel.
An Oklahoma teacher named Gloria Farley spent a
lifetime of summer vacations traveling the Arkansas
from its confluence with the Mississippi to the
source here in Colorado. She discovered grave
markers, land Claim markers and an incredible number
of inscriptions.
When an Oklahoma contact gave her a con from
Carthage, she published and soon received contact
from 3 or 4 others, usually living near a major
waterway like the Ohio or Missouri, who had made
similar discoveries. Coins featuring the Horse of
Carthage.
Academia has usually discounted such tales by
suggesting a careless coin collector is responsible
for the find. This has been the case for bronze age
artifacts as well. "They must have been lost by a
careless collector."
Oxhide ingots of copper have been found in America.
There are immense copper deposits in the Lake
Superior area which were intensely mined between
about 2000 BC to roughly 300 BC. It is about the
most pure copper on the planet. It comes with a bit
of silver mixed in and can be beaten into any shape
once removed from the surrounding rock.
Some people suggest the Minoans first established
trade with this copper culture. I theorize that
Phoenicia and Carthage took over the trade. It is
possible that American copper helped fuel the Bronze
Age.
There have been a series of small deposits of Roman
coins discovered along the Ohio River, near
Louisville Kentucky over several decades and a
variety of other evidence to suggest that America
has been a destination for adventurers, traders and
refugees for thousands of years, not just the past
500.
My research began while working for a small PBS
station in the mid eighties. Different versions of
the same story kept popping up when Native Elders
were in the studio.
"You know, there is nothing in our traditions about
a long walk from Alaska or Siberia. You would think
we would have a story or song about such an
adventure. No, our traditions say, We were refugees
who arrived by boat, not from the Pacific but from
the Atlantic."
Lakota people are among those who tell this story.
About the third time I heard this, my quest began. I
dug into folklore first.
There is an Irish legend of Osian the Bard who is
said to have followed Niam of the Golden Hair to her
home in Tir-Na-Nog, the land of eternal youth. The
legends says they are transported to her home in a
magic horse. I believe that magic horse may have
been a Phoenician hippoi like Phoenicia.
Would making landfall in the Caribbean been all that
bad? Best of Luck!

Hello Clint
Such a great crew member profile of you on the blog,
I'm so proud. You rock :)
The World Cup in South Africa has been absolutely
brilliant, the calibre of play as well as the
powerful unity it has brought to our country and
people... A truly amazing experience to be part of.
England drew with Algeria on Friday 0 - 0 which was
a disappointing match... Today Italy drew with New
Zealand 1 -1 and Paraguay took Slovakia for 2 - 0.
The two strong and shining teams so far are Brazil
and Argentina, Brazil playing Ivory Coast tonight
which should be a very exciting match. Uruguay is
also looking strong...
Will keep you posted!
Love from
Abi

Really enjoying the updates as you
meander your way toward the Azores. Especially the
episodes involving the flying fish, the gulls and
underwater predators. I recall a time long ago (or
so it seems) witnessing thousands upon thousands of
flying fish breaking out of the water. And the
breakfast / dinner call by Daniel singing a tune
from Space Balls. How appropriate. Daniel only saw
that movie when a kid about a 1000 times. You guys
should get him to recite some Calvin & Hobbs to pass
the time away. He knows about all of them.
May the four winds blow you home again.

Hey Peter
What the heck are you up to? What a life --- time
you got back to work. I'm sure the Captain must be
sick to death of you by now. At least you won't
suffer from cabin fever, you were born weird so it
should be all good.
Anyway got to get back to my BBQ spareribs and
chips:0) - stay safe, stay strong both physically
and mentally - not quite sure what your teams voyage
is all about, or what you are going to accomplish,
but I know your outlook on life will have changed
forever, which is a good thing. Stuck in one country
all your life does give you a very narrow outlook on
the world and when you are out there on the big blue
politicians and all there bullsh*t disappear into
obscurity. Apart from your family and friends you
are not missing anything back on land---except
cheese burgers, fly fishing, comfy warm bed, good
nights sleep, condensed milk, bacon and eggs, real
coffee, the super 14 and the soccer world cup.
Catch ya later
Your big, stronger, better looking, wealthier, more
intelligent brother John

I continue to watch your travels closely and it
would appear that you might all be living right.
I am no weather expert but it seems a Low Pressure
region will be forming this week off the coast of
Labrador that should start to pull the higher
pressure winds from the south and the ship to the
North. If you are far enough to the North and West
of your current position by Thursday, say around @16
N and @ 47 W, a nice little corridor of wind might
just open up for you taking you right to the Azores.
That Low pressure region might be just what the
doctor ordered. Good Luck, I hope the Sea’s
cooperate and the Low pressure hangs there long
enough to take you to your next destination. From
Thursday until Sunday ,at least, the winds should be
there and who knows what the following weeks will
bring. I follow your winds, waves and pressure on
passageweather.com and you on the Yellow brick Road.
Forecasts though are just that, they are very good
but not always perfect.
GodSpeed.

Marge and I are glued to Phoenicia's blog daily. We
share all your positive moments and challenges,
including the tin opener saga. I still have
flashbacks when I smell, feel and hear Phoenicia
whispering to me. I really miss the experience.
Philip and crew, I am mighty proud of you guys and

Heigh Ho Phoenicia - Looks like you
are on track to land in the Gulf of Mexico in about
a month! (Hopefully BP will have their mess under
control by then.) Let us know when you are arriving
and we will definitely come down and party with you
- Pensacola FL has beautiful beaches! Just Kidding,
but this actually supports the theory that Lehi's
family took this route to the promised land in
approximately 600 BC - a story in the book of
Mormon)
May the winds and waves bring you round the way to
your hearts' desires and destination: The Azores!!
That is our prayer every day.

Perhaps Philip should present a new
theory that the Phoenicians arrived at the Americas
first rather than circumnavigating Africa – then you
would be on schedule and going in the right
direction!! – but hang in there, this phase will
need all your stamina.
Steph – we’re thinking of you and just to let you

Howdy Clinton!
Wishing you a very happy birthday for 23rd May, you
will be in our thoughts, as always & especially on
Sunday. May you have a jolly birthday aboard The
Phoenicia.
" I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely
sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her
by,
And the wheel's kick, and the wind's song and the
white sails shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn
breaking.
I must go down to the seas again, for the call of
the running tide
Is a wild call, and a clear call that cannot be
denied;
And all I ask is a windy day and with the white
clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown plume and the
seagulls crying.
I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant
gypsy life,
To the gull's way and the whale's way where the
wind's like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing
fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long
trick's over"
( John Masefield. " Sea Fever" )
Lots of love,
Mum & Dad

Dear Philip,
I wish you were here as I'd love to hear your take
on the current political and financial situation as
there is potential pandemonium here in the UK.
Glad you are all still braving the seas and coping
with the storms and everything else. You are all
quite amazing and I do admire you.

Dear Peter
After 25 days on St Helena
and 5 days on the RMS I am finally home! Great to
see the kids again! The trip on the RMS was very
comfy (no sea sickness/german measles!) and life
on board revolved around eating wonderful food all
day. The house is coming along nicely and the boat
is near completion – another 2 – 3 weeks.
Thinking of you all the time
and miss you.
The kids send all there
love.
All my love, Vanessa

I'll blow as hard as I can and maybe
stir up some winds for you. Might be time to get out
the oars! Could you take turns hanging on to the
back of the boat and kicking? (Sorry if this is not
funny sailing humour - not intended to offend!) now
I now have a much clearer idea about what it means
to be in the doldrums. May God send you winds and
currents soon! Love, Jane/Daniel's Mom

To all the crew,
Congratulations on crossing the equator - though
the photos seem to reflect the mood of the doldrums!
You are not misssing anything here except Nick Clegg
charming the public while Gordon was caught on audio
referring to a lady he had just engaged in
conversation as a bigot! Dave the smarm has ditched
the suit and has taken to wearing navy sweaters to
try and regain the middle ground from Nick. So we
might have new government or, it the pundits are to
be believed, a hung-parliament when you return.
Believe me, you are best off where you are! Keep
going and keep up with the blogs - we find them very
reassuring,
Mother Edwards

Hi Ship Mates!Congrats on crossing the

Life back on land seems pretty tame after my stint on

properly house trained into using a conventional toilet.
Good luck with the rest of the trip.
Could someone please lend Pete a razor?

Phoenicia crew & captain,Here is one
for the doldrums of the equator.
While sitting raise your right foot off of the floor
(or deck) and move your foot in a clockwise circular
motion.
While doing that, use your right hand and pointer
finger and draw the number "6" in the air.
Ha. (Notice that your right foot is going the other
direction now)

We are enjoying the ship’s blog, which we view every two
evenings or so, and we enjoy it all. We are having a
wonderful time at the Seychelles & I (Mum ) am loving
all the swimming & snorkelling. We trust everyone
enjoyed the donuts & bread & you will have to do your
own trick to redeem your points on the fishing!!
Fair winds & hope you reach St Helena on schedule!!

Greetings Skipper and Crew on
Phoenicia,
Thank you Phillip for the envelope which I received in
good condition which contained my chart and brochure
which I will treasure. I will pass on Kirsten’s brochure
once he returns from Inyacha Yacht Race.
I am still with the crew in mind and spirit, but find
myself landlocked and its tough. Following your progress

May the wind always be at your back.
Fondest regards to you all.

Howdy Clinton,
We have a new pastime, it is
called "Phoenicia-spotting". So interesting to visit
the website & get updates on the ship's blog, & to
track the ship's position. What an experience you are
having, and we see you enjoy the cold sea "showers" .
This is a testing email, so will keep it short. We
leave for the Seychelles on Sunday eve, and will track
Phoenicia on Jim's computer.
Safe & happy sailing to you & the
crew.

Hi There
I'm currently completing my masters in Ancient
Cultural History and one of my primary topics is
Phoenician ship design. I just saw the story about
your voyage on Carte Blanche in South Africa and
would love to get more info on your recreation of
the ship and the sources used. Its incredible that
you have been able to successfully replicate this
ship and take it out to sea on such a long voyage,
congratulations! I hope the remainder of the voyage
goes well and I look forward to future
correspondence.
Thanks

Phoenicia~UPDATE!! White Oak
Elementary A+ School (Capt. Suz Wallace) and Danielle
Eubank (ship's expeditionary artist) have established
the link for our "Artist-in-Virtual-Residence" as of
this past week.
We had planned a Painting Unit collaboration upon
Danielle's return from South Africa & the Phoenicia. Due
to the technological link using SKYPE's 'live video
calls', Danielle was able to speak to the art students
this past week, giving introductions, telling about the
voyage, the ship, the crew and how she as an artist
spends her time on board.
The lesson plan for this project involved a painting
unit involving the introduction of 'Abstration and
Reflection', since these are the concepts Danielle uses
in her 'water paintings', reflecting on the voyage, ship
and experience. We began by learning what abstraction
means, utilizing inspiration from the early abstract
painter, Wassily Kandinsky. The children used the
combination of oil pastels and tempera paint to abstract
parts and pieces of the Phoenician Ship. Finishing that
as a warm up, the students looked at Danielle's website
of landscapes and waterscapes to learn about how to
reflect upon objects found on the water. We have
finished the first part of the painting with the sky and
land and next week we will finish with the abstract
ripples and waves in the water reflecting our far a
field places of our imaginations. Many of the childrens
compositions are of mountain ranges rising up out of the
sea, as well as cityscapes and beaches. We will be in
contact with Danielle next week through a "question
log", so immediate questions and or issues can be
addressed during the painting process. At the end of
March, we will return to conference with Danielle using
SKYPE video calling and share the students finished
paintings.
The whole project, paintings, documentation, as well
as a display of Danielle's involvement will be a focal
point in our Spring Art Exhibition at the Western
Carteret Library for the month of April. I will take
pictures and send, I usually put together a slide show.
Also, the local PRESS came out yesterday and took
pictures of Danielle and the children interacting on
SKYPE and of the children painting. The county Board of
Education has issued a PRESS RELEASE to the regional
radio and tv stations. We will let you know about the
coverage we get from this project as it comes. As of
now, we will be featured in the Carteret County
NEWS-TIMES and Onslow County TIDELAND NEWS newspapers,
here in North Carolina, USA.
Danielle and I have enjoyed working together on this
project and look forward to sailing together on board
the Phoenicia in the Mediterranean Sea this coming
summer!
blessings~
Capt. Suz

Hello to Captain Phillip
and his crew. Today Alice came into our school to
tell us all about your amazing expedition. We are
learning about ships and seafarers from the past but
didn't know much about the phoenicians. Alice showed
us photos and videos of your voyage so far and so we
now feel more knowledgeable about the phoenicians. We
wish all 19 of our class could visit your ship. Good
luck and make sure you all stay safe and don't get
captured by pirates! We look forward to keeping track
of your progress.

To Capt.
Phillip and your lovely crew
I trust
that you are all well and safe. I am very pleased to see
that you have arrived in Port Elizabeth safe and sound.
Well at least the worst is behind you and your crew and
that the Wild Coast stretch(waters) was kind to you.
I saw
your arrival on TV on Thursday morning into Port Elizabeth
and trust that this may also be a pleasant stay,( but not
as good as it was in Richards Bay.)
We miss
you all and hope that your passage further may be as
pleasant one.
Well i
will keep looking at the progress that Phoenicia will be
doing and will be thinking of all on board.
You take
care and God Bless

Hello Phenicia and Crew
I am lucky to have just found out about your safe
arrival in South Africa.
I am currently staying in Beirut, Lebanon and I believe
that I have uncovered an actual phoenician shipyard. It
is astounding !
What you have accomplished is amazing and I am quite
impressed at the size of Phoenicia.
Allow me to say that from the few pictures I have seen
so far, I feel the looks of your boat is more that of a
dow, it is true that I havent seen any pictures of
Phoenicia's stern, which might prove me wrong ! From
coins dated 800 BC visible here in Beirut''s museum, I
built myself a mental picture of the phoenician
resembling big hulled viking skiff. I am sure I can gain
much enlightenment from your researches.
I 'll be delighted to visit you and buy you a drink,
when you make it to Beirut.
Best regards
Jean-Jacques Davidian |

Dear
folks, I have been following
your venture with great interest. Congratulations to all
on the progress made and best wishes for the difficult
doubling of the Cape!
In the 1950's my father studied the
logistics of the Phoenician African circumnavigation. He
wrote up his results in the form of a historic novel,
entitled, "Fleet Surgeon to Pharaoh" (author, Sheldon A.
Jacobson). The book was published by the Oregon State
Press and is still available, either online or from his
daughter, Ruth Cummins, who lives in Seattle.

Dear Phoenicia
Glad to see you have arr RSA. I am a retired educ
broadcaster who lectures on nautical matters on cruise
ships and am off to the Amazon & Orinoco aboard Marco Polo
Monday 1 Feb. Have been praising Necho (and Herodotus)
aboard various ships for many years and shall also praise
Phoenicia and her Captain and crew(s) this trip, with pix
fr yr albums (full attribution to yr website) in one of my
lectures. I really do wish you all the best and shall do
all I can to get those aboard to look at yr website and
indeed to contrib to the costs of the enterprise.
Looks as if the last part of the Mozambique run was a tad
boring, but better that than the other thing!
You are all amazing. More than you know are wishing you
well, happy and safe..

To the most amazing people on
the planet.
I miss all of you, my extended family, sitting here in my
Big Fat Comfy (BFC) leather chair in my air conditioned
office eating frozen Bon Bons. I really do. I am now a
“Ships Blog” junkie as I await every update. Steph, you
nailed the experience to a “T”(not sure why it’s a “T”,
should be “H” for Hammer) with your Blog. I feel like I am
back on the ship. Dirman, you still numba 1 singer!
Strangely I, like Nick Swallow, am drawn back to the
“scene of the crime” and I want another chance to redeem
myself as a worthy crewmember. Looks like I had a torn
meniscus after all. My knee is still really messed up.
Thanks for putting up with me and babying me. It all
Alice’s fault for encouraging me to jump of the ship and
swim back in Mayotte Harbor. You, Water Dog! Still
enjoying your afternoon dingy swims?
Glad to hear Aziz is still “boiling water”, Yuri still
tries to make real bread and fish head soup is the new
rage. Sulhan, I assume, still uses an axe and a saw to
filet a fish?
Niklas, how many days to Richards Bay? 6? Expect 4 , hope
for 2, wish for miracles. So happy you finally hit the
current. Have fun in Richards Bay.
I love it and Love all of you.
Phillip, Keep the dream alive. I read a great paper on
xylophones. I am with you on that one.
Keith
P.S. Aziz can you read this to Dirman and Sulhan. I spoke
with Daniel Dad, seemed like a great guy. |

Phoenicia~ We have been
watching with GREAT enthusiasm and interest (all 700+ of
us) and are relieved you have sailed around the pirate
(Somali) coast.....here on the coast of North Carolina, we
know a thing or two about pirates (where Blackbeard found
his demise). We are glad you are safe and of good spirits
and readying for the next leg to South Africa.
We will be reading "Milad" over the
coming weeks, read by one of our own parent's who is from
the land of Phoenicia. And we are anxiously awaiting and
will be watching Danielle's voyage and return to the
States as we begin our painting and
expeditionary-artist-online unit.
Fair Winds and safe passage

Hi
Philip, Aziz, Dirman, Sulhan and crew (and Alice)-
I just wanted you to know I'm following
you guys on the website and telling folks about your
journey. I am very happy to hear you have avoided the
pirates so far despite the spike in attacks.
Philip and Niklas, I'm very much
enjoying your journal posts...especially the photos. Keep
it up!
Aziz must be doing some really
creative cooking now without the ability to add Coca-Cola
to his pancakes. :)
I can't believe I'm saying this,
but...man, I miss sailing with you guys!
Praying for a safe passage to
Mayotte and the Comoros.

Hey Phillip! Glad to see
you're actually pointed at land! I thought you might be
heading to Antarctica to hunt for penguins. Nice deke out
there in the Indian Ocean, should throw them pirates off
your track! It was lucky I wasn't there; I'd be dizzy as
well as sea sick! Good winds and clear skies, you guys!

Hello Yuri and all the Crew
I know how far you are from
here, but after crossing the equator seens that you are
a little bit near Brazil. Maybe the wind of the good
thoughts could reach you and follow you 'til the end of
this journey. I am sure Yuri is very happy, so I am
happy! Felicidades a todos!

Hello
sailors from the past! Last
year I sent out a whole lot of bottleposts in the middle
of the Atlantic sea... so if you got any spare time over
you could always look for nicely decorated love inspired
bottles they might have found their way to the Indian
Ocean!
Another thing Ito make time fly is
take something on the boat, hide it in the inner pocket of
Obama's suit (in your mind) and let your fellow shipmates
guess there way to it!
-Is it in Sweden?
-No!

Hej
Niklas! Grattis till att ha
passerat ekvatorn under segel.

Hello, I am doing a project
for school in the US on the Phoenicians and would like to
know how many crew sailed in the various Phoenician ships,
the mussels, the galley ships, and the merchant ships.
Also, did the boats take passengers,
and if they did (the merchant ships) what did they do for
food and shelter and where did they sleep.
If anyone on your ship could answer
my questions, which I haven't be able to find the answers
to online, I would greatly appreciate it
Sincerely

QUESTION:
I have
looked "all over" and can not find any information on how
much Wood or Trees were used.
I found referenced to Viking ships which are "similar"
Those replicas used Used 11 Large Oak trees, 3-feet
diameter and 15-feet tall.
I appreciate this information. I am researching another
ancient expedition ( 500 bc ) which used 8 ships to travel
14,000 miles.
Gunnar Hansen
ANSWER:
There
were a number of different timbers used in the
construction of the ship, including oak and walnut for the
ribs, red pine for the planks, Aleppo pine for the keel,
Cyprus fir for some timbers including the mast and yard.
Olive wood was used for the dowels and pegs.
The
builders estimated that they had used about 80 tons of
timber but we believe the figure to be closer to 40 tons
unless they were extremely wasteful which does not appear
at have been the case.

Dear Philip and Crew,
We were so sorry to learn
that you have had to return to Hurdaya and plan to
abandon the trip for the time being. You must be
bitterly disappointed, having battled so hard to keep
going and overcome so many difficulties. However, there
is no point in beating your heads against a brick wall
and you will have the summer to rest, recuperate and
recharge your batteries.
We all look forward to
seeing you back in Chaldon complete with beard.

Hi Phil
Becca’s just been to stay and spent the
evening telling us all about her fantastic trip, and all
your trials and tribulations in Sudan.
Despite the problems, it’s an
amazing (and ambitious) project and I’m most impressed
(being an avid Tim Severin fan, I feel quite well placed
to comment!!).
I’d love to join you for a leg, but
sadly having two children of 8 and 6 will make that
impossible, so I will have to make do with the website.
It’s good to hear of you again… too
many years have passed since those skiing holidays. We are
going skiing this year for the first time as a family
–
you could probably do a year’s worth of boat repairs on
what it’s costing us!
Good luck. And avoid the pirates. My
brother-in-law who works for a major kidnap rescue firm is
currently ‘rescuing’ 24 crew from a tanker off the Somali
coast. His advice is don’t go anywhere near. He is very
concerned about you!
Take care

Hi Philip et al
Have been following the last
few days with interest. Ah well, Rome wasn't built in a
day and who knows how many attempts the original
Phoenicians made before their ultimate success which we
are sure you will have in the fullness of time.
Meanwhile, look forward to downing a few pints with you
in the Sailor's Return - that is if it is still in

Please note, that a
foolproof way to transmit the engine torque from the
engine to the propeller shaft; is with the application
of a key and keyway in the shaft and coupling. In the
Phoenician diet, you did not mention ;"Fish stew" a
favourite of the Phoenician sailors.
Favourable winds and good
sailing.

To Phil, John, Eric, Jev and other crew
members,
I am so pleased to hear you are on your way –
you have done a FANTASTIC job sorting
everything out and waiting so long.
Have a very good trip and a happy Christmas.
If you don’t cover at least 200n miles on 25
Dec it won’t be due to a lack of people (me
included) toasting you and willing you great
progress.
Love,

Hi to everyone onboard!I ran
across your site while searching for
information about Phoenician ship wrecks. I'm
not in doubt that the norse boat builders
picked up a lot of knowledge from the earlier
Mediterranean ship designs, including the
square rig and the side rudder.
I wish you all the best on your voyage
around Africa. It's an amazing and important
project!
Merry Christmas and happy new year!

Hello

Your

and I met you at Caroline's house after Joy's
funeral. I am still in touch with your
mother, and she has been good enough to visit
me in Hale when she is in the north. It is

Every good wish for you all for the rest of

Hello Phoenicia team!
Really nice to see that the trip is going well.
Seems like such a long time ago that Phoenicia
was just a sketch on the wall at circle. It is
so nice to see it alive and on its great
journey.. The challenges will be huge but the
adventure will be priceless... I wish you all
the best of luck and look forward to following
your journey online..
Have fun!

Dear Philip, Nick and Crew
Having been away ourselves for three weeks (Bhutan
and the Andaman Islands!) we were delighted to get
back and see that you have some more crew and that
the carpenter has been and gone. We are so
pleased that you are now on the way again and wish
you all the best for the voyage. Although we had
just completed a 30 hour homeward journey we
managed to make it to The Sailors Return yesterday
so caught up with the 'locals' - present landlady
leaving on the 2nd November - I wonder how many
more we will have before you set foot in Chaldon
again? Merryn is getting settled in Cairo
although at the moment she is attending a Sufi
Music Festival in the desert!
Take care all of you.

Hi all,
It seems I can't
leave you on your own for five minutes and you get
into all sorts of trouble. A little excitement
gets the adrenalin going.
I noticed that
when you all were driving to visit the pyramids I
was driving my desk "green green"!!!!!
Things busy here
but coping.
Have you found
Eric's trigger word yet, I would love to see that,
any speculation as to what the old colonial may
change into?
I hope things
have quietened down a little, am thinking of you
all and wishing I was still aboard.
Have a great sail
down to Aden.

Another great adventure. I’m looking forward to
following along through the website. Just keep an eye
on Eric. When we were in college together, we went to
see a hypnotist perform at a local night club. Eric
was chosen out of the crowd to be the ‘assistant’ and
was put under. To this day certain words can set him
off and he turns into a…well, I guess you’ll see for
yourselves soon enough.
All

WOW! We've been watching your progress carefully, and

has not all been according to plan, but you are still
making history. It's an amazing journey to even think
of, never mind make.
Best wishes from all the Meynells: Alice, Acky, Hugo,
Doune, Ruth and Arthur.
(Rachel is well and cheerful Mike, we're taking good
care of her!)

I heard about this project on Radio 4 -
it has captured my imagination and I am following your
progress with great interest. I hope your sail to
Yemen is successful and that "Phoenicia" will continue
to go from strength to strength. Good luck.

Many congratulations on getting this far with your
great adventure. May I wish you fair winds and
good sailing and a very happy outcome to your

I have seen
the latest photograph of Phoenicia on the web site. She
looks really beautiful with the ceremonial sail. I wish
you all "Good Luck" and "Bon Voyage." and hope the tow
goes smoothly without too many difficulties. |

Hi everyone on board the good ship Phoenicia
Wishing you all the best for the voyage. Tamar and I
loved being in Arwad - thank you all for your
hospitality. The purple sail is wonderful - we will
be following your journey around Africa and are
planning to put up a map in The Sailor's Return
plotting your progress.
Take care
Love from Andy, Rosie and Tamar

I am grateful to you for
bringing this exciting project to my attention. By
bringing together aspects of history, geography, design
and technology, the arts and learning outside the
classroom, the Phoenicia project seems to offer a
genuinely cross-curricular learning experience for
students of all ages. |
