  Hi
Just want to say a big thank you for calling into the Mina port in Lebanon. It was something of great and joy and interest for the local people to see this ship especially for the school children and I want to thank Nicolas especially for answering questions and talking to us for a while. Congratulations on your voyage and achievements and I really hope you enjoyed your time in Lebanon.
Best Wishes

  Heartiest congratulations Phillip!

An achievement for the history books and a two-plus year adventure that has kept people worldwide enthralled.

We now have a clearer idea of what people in that era were capable of with seafaring and exploration.

Best wishes to the core crew also!

I only wish I'd experienced the original 600BC toilet before it was washed away by a big wave and Dirman had to build a new one.

  Hi Phillip & Crew

I just want to congratulate you and the whole crew on your amazing accomplishment. It really feels good to know that you succeeded and proved the ever present critics wrong – I can like it!!!

Please convey my message to the whole crew and tell them they had a extremely good inspirational influence on the club as a whole. They might not know it, but the Phoenicia left a legacy behind that people cherish and can relate to.

It is good to know that we were a part of this adventure albeit in a small way and we are proud to be associated with the Phoenicia and everything she stands for.

Once more, congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hope we meet again.

Cheers
Kirsten

Heartiest congratulations on the successful completion of a remarkable venture. It has been an adventure in itself following the progress of the expedition.
(I learn this evening that the photograph of the Phoenician Ship now hangs in what is known as the "Prime Minister's Bedroom" in the residence of the British High Commissioner in South Africa.")

To the captain and crew: what a phenomenal voyage you have completed. Congratulations, and enjoy the well deserved celebrations. We are sure you will all miss your home on the sea, the Phoenicia. We will so miss our "Phoenicia -Spotting".....you have kept us interested, entertained, and at times, ( we have to admit ), somewhat daunted, especially as you sailed the Atlantic!  However even though you will not be out there on the oceans, we are sure that we will be returning to the website to read it all over again.
With our regards,

The Phoenician Ship in Malta was quite memorable. It is the first time a replica ship of the Phoenicians entered Malta. AS I am coming from direct descent from the Phoenicians, seeing one of our ancestors vessel is quite emotional. A Maritme Historian friend of mine was also excited to see the vessel as well. I was much honoured by Philip’s Beale and Yuri Sanada’s presence and was able to show them the best sights in Malta. I have taken some photos of their stay here too. I have also filmed the vessel’s stay and departure and can see a short 7 minute I have edited video plus photos at the following link http://www.vidquest.tv/phoenicia.html.

Wow! I came along to see your vessel the day following your arrival in Gibraltar... and was stunned to see it. I think I was expecting something larger and was in awe of the journey you (and your historic predecessors) undertook in a ship that must feel dwarfed by the oceans through which you have sailed.

I don't have 'sea-legs' at all and I have to admire your skills (and those of the ship-builders who built her) in navigating the various seas and oceans that you have covered.

May you all have fair winds to enable a safe arrival at your destination!

Dear Sirs,

I have just seen your course plotted on the map and am astonished to see how far west into the Atlantic you steered; I thought the Phoenicians hugged the coast of Africa throughout the whole of their voyage.
Was this not incredibly dangerous? Were you lucky or is your vessel easily capable of dealing with the Atlantic at these latitudes?
Would then the original Phoenicians have had to steer out into the Atlantic?

Well done - you are doing a marvellous job - I will have to buy the DVD and book when they come out.

Very best wishes,
Terence M. Hayes

  Danielle,

We are keeping track of your voyage once again.....already had a boy in class ask if you were sailing for North Africa, that's where his father was born. We will have so many new questions about the Med Sea. Ask the crew about the change in color of the sea from the ocean for me....I'm voting for tints and shades of cerulean! In 2 weeks I will get to tell the Phoenicia story and our school's artist-in- virtual-residence project at the National Maritime Heritage Educator's Conference in Baltimore, MD.....fair thee well~ capt suz, coastal NC

  Hi Crew.

congratulations! your voyage is very interesting.

it will be very interesting to see your ship in one of the most important phoenician's colony (island of Mothia near Marsala, Sicily, Italy)

I am an italian's reenactor (roman's soldier) of Milan (Italy) and I have visited Mothia (founded circa 600 BC) just this summer.

Good Luck.

Luigi

PS I am wondering to build also a roman's ship. Could you tell me the cost of the materials necessary to build the ship (workers excluded)? Thanx

  Hi Phillip and Crew

Great to read about the fantastic progress and pleased the stocks of fresh veggies are still holding out. I always appreciated the kai (food) onboard, no matter who was cooking - Yuri's fresh bread a particularly memorable treat, up there next to seared tuna. In fact I think I had second helpings pretty much every meal!!

I was wondering if anyone had considered sprouting beans?

I've been experimenting with them in readiness for a big offshore sail and even I can grow them!

These little babies are SO easy to sprout in an old jar, take up no room at all as seeds when they're stowed away and they are good to eat in as little as two or three days. Very cheap and highly nutritious! Thoroughly recommended. Best of all, lentils, Mung beans, Maple, Alfalfa.

Just a thought for next time you re-provision.

As always, I wish you fair winds and look forward to keeping up to date with your progress.

I just found you through Rod Meldrum. What a fantastic thing you are demonstrating. I read an obscure news clip back in 1999 I believe, that officials had found an unusual wooden vessel on bottom of the St. Lawrence seaway, that was obstructing one of the locks or something. At that time I did not realize what it could mean. Now I believe it could relate to the theory of pre-Christian Atlantic migrations as they said the wood was extremely old and curios type.

At the time I was struck with the feeling that it might relate to a Jaredite migration from western Spain. I am in possession of an emailed document from a man who descends from the Pyrenees Mountain people. He says that ancestral verbal histories taught him where his people came from and when ancestors sailed into the western sea, many stayed in the mountains. If these wonderful people can be linked to the Jaredites, by the same methodology used by Rod Meldrum, another "Jaredite" expedition could be a feasible project.

Has anyone built a Jaredite "barge" yet?

  Hey Pete,

Well done! Hang in there! In a while you'll be sailing your own 'Phoenician Ship'! I wish I had the miles you now have... To the rest of the crew, I missed you at the Zululand Yacht Club. I was on a yacht called Alacrity when you arrived at Richards Bay. The purple sails made me remember my primary school history lessons about the Phoenicians. The story is unfolding. Of particular interest is the blog concerning possible Phoenician presence in the Americas. There's also a story about a chart of Antarctica originating in content from some time BC.

Well done all!

Congratulations to you all on completing the long voyage to Flores.!

I am immensely interested in your great recreation of Pharaoh Necho's ship's voyage, having first been introduced to Herodotus's account of it at the age of 11, way back in 1950. Having retired from a career in educational broadcasting in 1999, I have much enjoyed publicising your expedition since you began building Phoenicia in Arwad. As an (unpaid) lecturer aboard cruise ships for the past decade I have been singing your praises and drawing attention to the website whenever possible and shall continue to do so while my marbles are spared.

Hello Phoenicia and Crew,

Saw the posting about Phoenicians in America. I have been chasing diffusionist stories for about twenty years. There is a wide variety of physical evidence for Phoenician and Carthaginian visits to the Americas. There are many inscriptions along the major waterways, some which reach the Arkansas River here in Colorado. In the southeastern corner of the State are a series of calendar caves with depictions of Anubis and Ba al. On a bluff nearby is a gallery with text in Neo- Punic, Egyptian and Iberian Celtic Ogam. There are also depictions of African animals on the panel.

An Oklahoma teacher named Gloria Farley spent a lifetime of summer vacations traveling the Arkansas from its confluence with the Mississippi to the source here in Colorado. She discovered grave markers, land Claim markers and an incredible number of inscriptions.
When an Oklahoma contact gave her a con from Carthage, she published and soon received contact from 3 or 4 others, usually living near a major waterway like the Ohio or Missouri, who had made similar discoveries. Coins featuring the Horse of Carthage.

Academia has usually discounted such tales by suggesting a careless coin collector is responsible for the find. This has been the case for bronze age artifacts as well. "They must have been lost by a careless collector."

Oxhide ingots of copper have been found in America. There are immense copper deposits in the Lake Superior area which were intensely mined between about 2000 BC to roughly 300 BC. It is about the most pure copper on the planet. It comes with a bit of silver mixed in and can be beaten into any shape once removed from the surrounding rock.

Some people suggest the Minoans first established trade with this copper culture. I theorize that Phoenicia and Carthage took over the trade. It is possible that American copper helped fuel the Bronze Age.

There have been a series of small deposits of Roman coins discovered along the Ohio River, near Louisville Kentucky over several decades and a variety of other evidence to suggest that America has been a destination for adventurers, traders and refugees for thousands of years, not just the past 500.

My research began while working for a small PBS station in the mid eighties. Different versions of the same story kept popping up when Native Elders were in the studio.

"You know, there is nothing in our traditions about a long walk from Alaska or Siberia. You would think we would have a story or song about such an adventure. No, our traditions say, We were refugees who arrived by boat, not from the Pacific but from the Atlantic."

Lakota people are among those who tell this story. About the third time I heard this, my quest began. I dug into folklore first.

There is an Irish legend of Osian the Bard who is said to have followed Niam of the Golden Hair to her home in Tir-Na-Nog, the land of eternal youth. The legends says they are transported to her home in a magic horse. I believe that magic horse may have been a Phoenician hippoi like Phoenicia.

Would making landfall in the Caribbean been all that bad? Best of Luck!

Hello Clint

Such a great crew member profile of you on the blog, I'm so proud. You rock :)

The World Cup in South Africa has been absolutely brilliant, the calibre of play as well as the powerful unity it has brought to our country and people... A truly amazing experience to be part of.

England drew with Algeria on Friday 0 - 0 which was a disappointing match... Today Italy drew with New Zealand 1 -1 and Paraguay took Slovakia for 2 - 0.

The two strong and shining teams so far are Brazil and Argentina, Brazil playing Ivory Coast tonight which should be a very exciting match. Uruguay is also looking strong...

Will keep you posted!

Love from
Abi

Really enjoying the updates as you meander your way toward the Azores. Especially the episodes involving the flying fish, the gulls and underwater predators. I recall a time long ago (or so it seems) witnessing thousands upon thousands of flying fish breaking out of the water. And the breakfast / dinner call by Daniel singing a tune from Space Balls. How appropriate. Daniel only saw that movie when a kid about a 1000 times. You guys should get him to recite some Calvin & Hobbs to pass the time away. He knows about all of them.

May the four winds blow you home again.

Hi guys! Alice here. How's everything going?! I have a new fancy phone and I have bookmarks to the yellowbrick and your blog page on my home screen! Check it daily! Let me know if you need anything, card game ideas, fish recipes etc..
Things here are good. Working very hard but it's better than sitting around wishing I was on the boat. My friend bought me two one week old chics so I have been playing with them and trying to tame them!
Thinking of you. Let me know what you need and I can send it over with good old Yuri!
Super strong winds in the right direction!
Daniel-send me an email! I will write a much more detailed one this weekend. Memorial Day weekend!

Hey Peter

What the heck are you up to? What a life --- time you got back to work. I'm sure the Captain must be sick to death of you by now. At least you won't suffer from cabin fever, you were born weird so it should be all good.

Anyway got to get back to my BBQ spareribs and chips:0) - stay safe, stay strong both physically and mentally - not quite sure what your teams voyage is all about, or what you are going to accomplish, but I know your outlook on life will have changed forever, which is a good thing. Stuck in one country all your life does give you a very narrow outlook on the world and when you are out there on the big blue politicians and all there bullsh*t disappear into obscurity. Apart from your family and friends you are not missing anything back on land---except cheese burgers, fly fishing, comfy warm bed, good nights sleep, condensed milk, bacon and eggs, real coffee, the super 14 and the soccer world cup.

Catch ya later

I continue to watch your travels closely and it would appear that you might all be living right.

I am no weather expert but it seems a Low Pressure region will be forming this week off the coast of Labrador that should start to pull the higher pressure winds from the south and the ship to the North. If you are far enough to the North and West of your current position by Thursday, say around @16 N and @ 47 W, a nice little corridor of wind might just open up for you taking you right to the Azores.

That Low pressure region might be just what the doctor ordered. Good Luck, I hope the Sea’s cooperate and the Low pressure hangs there long enough to take you to your next destination. From Thursday until Sunday ,at least, the winds should be there and who knows what the following weeks will bring. I follow your winds, waves and pressure on passageweather.com and you on the Yellow brick Road.

Forecasts though are just that, they are very good but not always perfect.

GodSpeed.

I still have flashbacks when I smell, feel and hear Phoenicia whispering to me. I really miss the experience. Philip and crew, I am mighty proud of you guys and girl in the way you are handling this tough leg. We are always thinking of your adventure. Keep positive, you are in our prayers.

We enjoyed Lynette Clement's poem, which we learned in primary school and so named our yacht "Sea Fever."

Heigh Ho Phoenicia - Looks like you are on track to land in the Gulf of Mexico in about a month! (Hopefully BP will have their mess under control by then.) Let us know when you are arriving and we will definitely come down and party with you - Pensacola FL has beautiful beaches! Just Kidding, but this actually supports the theory that Lehi's family took this route to the promised land in approximately 600 BC - a story in the book of Mormon)

May the winds and waves bring you round the way to your hearts' desires and destination: The Azores!! That is our prayer every day.

Wishing you a very happy birthday for 23rd May, you will be in our thoughts, as always & especially on Sunday. May you have a jolly birthday aboard The Phoenicia.

" I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel's kick, and the wind's song and the white sails shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking.

I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call, and a clear call that cannot be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day and with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown plume and the seagulls crying.

I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull's way and the whale's way where the wind's like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over"

To all the crew,

Congratulations  on crossing the equator - though the photos seem to reflect the mood of the doldrums! You are not misssing anything here except Nick Clegg charming the public while Gordon was caught on audio referring to a lady he had just engaged in conversation as a bigot! Dave the smarm has ditched the suit and has taken to wearing navy sweaters to try and regain the middle ground from Nick. So we might have new government or, it the pundits are to be believed, a hung-parliament when you return.  Believe me, you are best off where you are! Keep going and keep up with the blogs - we find them very reassuring,

Phoenicia crew & captain,

Here is one for the doldrums of the equator.

While sitting raise your right foot off of the floor (or deck) and move your foot in a clockwise circular motion.

While doing that, use your right hand and pointer finger and draw the number "6" in the air.

Ha. (Notice that your right foot is going the other direction now)

Its incredible that you have been able to successfully  replicate this ship and take it out to sea on such a long voyage, congratulations! Phoenicia~

UPDATE!! White Oak Elementary A+ School (Capt. Suz Wallace) and Danielle Eubank (ship's expeditionary artist) have established the link for our "Artist-in-Virtual-Residence" as of this past week.

We had planned a Painting Unit collaboration upon Danielle's return from South Africa & the Phoenicia. Due to the technological link using SKYPE's 'live video calls', Danielle was able to speak to the art students this past week, giving introductions, telling about the voyage, the ship, the crew and how she as an artist spends her time on board.

The lesson plan for this project involved a painting unit involving the introduction of 'Abstration and Reflection', since these are the concepts Danielle uses in her 'water paintings', reflecting on the voyage, ship and experience. We began by learning what abstraction means, utilizing inspiration from the early abstract painter, Wassily Kandinsky. The children used the combination of oil pastels and tempera paint to abstract parts and pieces of the Phoenician Ship. Finishing that as a warm up, the students looked at Danielle's website of landscapes and waterscapes to learn about how to reflect upon objects found on the water. We have finished the first part of the painting with the sky and land and next week we will finish with the abstract ripples and waves in the water reflecting our far a field places of our imaginations. Many of the childrens compositions are of mountain ranges rising up out of the sea, as well as cityscapes and beaches. We will be in contact with Danielle next week through a "question log", so immediate questions and or issues can be addressed during the painting process. At the end of March, we will return to conference with Danielle using SKYPE video calling and share the students finished paintings.

The whole project, paintings, documentation, as well as a display of Danielle's involvement will be a focal point in our Spring Art Exhibition at the Western Carteret Library for the month of April. I will take pictures and send, I usually put together a slide show.

Also, the local PRESS came out yesterday and took pictures of Danielle and the children interacting on SKYPE and of the children painting. The county Board of Education has issued a PRESS RELEASE to the regional radio and tv stations. We will let you know about the coverage we get from this project as it comes. As of now, we will be featured in the Carteret County NEWS-TIMES and Onslow County TIDELAND NEWS newspapers, here in North Carolina, USA.

Danielle and I have enjoyed working together on this project and look forward to sailing together on board the Phoenicia in the Mediterranean Sea this coming summer!

blessings~

Capt. Suz

Hello to Captain Phillip and his crew.   Today Alice came into our school to tell us all about your amazing expedition. We are learning about ships and seafarers from the past but didn't know much about the phoenicians. Alice showed us photos and videos of your voyage so far and so we now feel more knowledgeable about the phoenicians. We wish all 19 of our class could visit your ship. Good luck and make sure you all stay safe and don't get captured by pirates! We look forward to keeping track of your progress.

From Henry Winters,   When rounding the southern tip of Africa, please confirm if the sun is really on your right hand side at noon? as claimed by the ancient Phoenician Sailors.

To Capt. Phillip and your lovely crew

I trust that you are all well and safe. I am very pleased to see that you have arrived in Port Elizabeth safe and sound. Well at least the worst is behind you and your crew and that the Wild Coast stretch(waters) was kind to you.

I saw your arrival on TV on Thursday morning into Port Elizabeth and trust that this may also be a pleasant stay,( but not as good as it was in Richards Bay.)

We miss you all and hope that your passage further may be as pleasant one.

Well i will keep looking at the progress that Phoenicia will be doing and will be thinking of all on board.

You take care and God Bless

Elva & Steve Martin

Hello Phenicia and Crew

I am lucky to have just found out about your safe arrival in South Africa.

I am currently staying in Beirut, Lebanon and I believe that I have uncovered an actual phoenician shipyard. It is astounding !

What you have accomplished is amazing and I am quite impressed at the size of Phoenicia.

Allow me to say that from the few pictures I have seen so far, I feel the looks of your boat is more that of a dow, it is true that I havent seen any pictures of Phoenicia's stern, which might prove me wrong ! From coins dated 800 BC visible here in Beirut''s museum, I built myself a mental picture of the phoenician resembling big hulled viking skiff. I am sure I can gain much enlightenment from your researches.

I 'll be delighted to visit you and buy you a drink, when you make it to Beirut.

Best regards

Jean-Jacques Davidian

  Dear folks,

I have been following your venture with great interest. Congratulations to all on the progress made and best wishes for the difficult doubling of the Cape!

In the 1950's my father studied the logistics of the Phoenician African circumnavigation. He wrote up his results in the form of a historic novel, entitled, "Fleet Surgeon to Pharaoh" (author, Sheldon A. Jacobson). The book was published by the Oregon State Press and is still available, either online or from his daughter, Ruth Cummins, who lives in Seattle.

  Dear Phoenicia
Glad to see you have arr RSA. I am a retired educ broadcaster who lectures on nautical matters on cruise ships and am off to the Amazon & Orinoco aboard Marco Polo Monday 1 Feb. Have been praising Necho (and Herodotus) aboard various ships for many years and shall also praise Phoenicia and her Captain and crew(s) this trip, with pix fr yr albums (full attribution to yr website) in one of my lectures. I really do wish you all the best and shall do all I can to get those aboard to look at yr website and indeed to contrib to the costs of the enterprise.
Looks as if the last part of the Mozambique run was a tad boring, but better that than the other thing!

You are all amazing. More than you know are wishing you well, happy and safe..

Glad to hear from you again and to lean that you have new crew replacements and are having a great time in Richards Bay. At least you are safe from those nasty pirates . I just hope you will share some photographs with us once a while . It seems all the new people you meet are being wonderful and I am sure you can count on this sort of welcome on your trip from stop to stop.
Again congratulations and our best as you continue your trip.

To the most amazing people on the planet.

I miss all of you, my extended family, sitting here in my Big Fat Comfy (BFC) leather chair in my air conditioned office eating frozen Bon Bons. I really do. I am now a “Ships Blog” junkie as I await every update. Steph, you nailed the experience to a “T”(not sure why it’s a “T”, should be “H” for Hammer) with your Blog. I feel like I am back on the ship. Dirman, you still numba 1 singer!

Strangely I, like Nick Swallow, am drawn back to the “scene of the crime” and I want another chance to redeem myself as a worthy crewmember. Looks like I had a torn meniscus after all. My knee is still really messed up. Thanks for putting up with me and babying me. It all Alice’s fault for encouraging me to jump of the ship and swim back in Mayotte Harbor. You, Water Dog! Still enjoying your afternoon dingy swims?

Glad to hear Aziz is still “boiling water”, Yuri still tries to make real bread and fish head soup is the new rage. Sulhan, I assume, still uses an axe and a saw to filet a fish?

Niklas, how many days to Richards Bay? 6? Expect 4 , hope for 2, wish for miracles. So happy you finally hit the current. Have fun in Richards Bay.

I love it and Love all of you.

Phillip, Keep the dream alive. I read a great paper on xylophones. I am with you on that one.

Keith

P.S. Aziz can you read this to Dirman and Sulhan. I spoke with Daniel Dad, seemed like a great guy.
