Philip Beale
Expedition Leader
Philip Beale (BA hons Politics from the University of Hull) started his career in the Royal Navy before having a successful career in the City for over 15 years. He was initially employed by Robert Fleming & Co and later at Morley Fund Management, part of Aviva PLC. In both organisations he held directorships of their investment management companies.
He left the City in 2003 to pursue an ambition to build an 8th century BC Indonesian ship and sail it to West Africa to demonstrate that early Indonesian seafarers could have reached West Africa by sail rather than by land.
The Borobudur Ship
Expedition (www.borobudurshipexpedition.com)
as it became known, was successfully completed in late 2003-04 for
which Philip was awarded Indonesia’s highest honour by President Megawati
for services to Indonesian Culture.
He is based in near Lulworth in South Dorset and when not working on
Phoenicia spends time on motivational speaking, presentations and
consultancy work for a wide range of organisations.
In 2008 Philip will lead the Phoenician Ship Expedition and skipper Phoenicia to recreate the first circumnavigation of Africa.
